Andropogon geradii – Big Bluestem

One of the best looking foliage of all the native grasses, probably why they call it the king of native grasses. Reaches a height of 4 to 8 feet and has blue-green stems that turn red in the summer and then change to a copper color in the fall. Will tolerate varied conditions from moist to dry, best location is full sun and dry average soil. Makes a nice clump which can be divided.

Asclepias purpurascens – Purple Milkweed

It has rose pink flowers that appear in the summer atop of a 2-4 foot stem. This variety tends to be clump forming and does spread as much as some of the other varieties making it a good choice for your wildflower garden. As with the other milkweeds it attracts Butterflies and is also deer resistant. Best grown in full sun and will tolerate dry or moist soil.

Aster novae-belgii – New York Aster

A beautiful fall blooming aster that has blue to purple flowers atop of 3-4 foot stems. Each stem will have several flowers which are great for cutting. As with most Asters the butterflies love this variety. Needs full sun with moist to average soil in which it will make a nice large clump.

Caltha palustris – Marsh Marigold

You will be amazed at the bright yellow flowers that appear in the spring time. This is a wetland plant and must have constant moisture to survive. It is great to put at the edge of a pond or along the stream bank. It will reach a height of 10-12 inches with a spread of 12-18 inches. It mostly stays in a clump but will spread some from seed though very slowly. The leaves are round to kidney shaped and have a waxy shiny appearance. Best location for this plant is semi-shade and wet or boggy soils.

Carex appalachia – Appalachian Sedge

This is excellent sedge to use as a groundcover for dry shade. It will reach a height of about 12 inches and has very fine texture foliage, and forms a nice small mound. Drought tolerant and deer resistant.

Carex plantaginea – Plantainleaf Sedge

This sedge variety has 1 inch broad leaf that has a crinkle look to it. It will remain evergreen is most areas. Prefers shade to semi-shade in average to moist soils. It does have a inconspicuous white black tipped flower that appears in the spring. It is best used for the foliage and groundcover aspect. It will reach a height of 8-10 inches with a 10-12 inch spread.

Helianthus divaricatus – Woodland Sunflower

As the common name implies this Sunflower does well in dry dappled shade. Has 2 inch flowers made up of yellow petals and disk that are atop a 4-6 foot stem. The flowers appear in late summer to early fall.

Heliopsis helianthoides – False Sunflower

A beautiful plant that will naturalize quickly in moist or dry soils. Has golden yellow flowers in the summer and will bloom for 6 weeks or more which is along time for a native perennial. These beautiful flowers are atop a 4-6 foot stems and are a sure butterfly attractor, they also make great cut flowers.

Hexastylis arifolia – Little Brown Jug

The beautiful evergreen heart shaped leaves is what makes this plant so popular. The common name comes from the bloom shape and color. It has a small brown jug-shaped calyx type flower that is right on the ground underneath the leaves. They prefer shade to semi-shade with rich somewhat moist soil. These will grow into a large clump after several years.

Oenothera fruticosa – Narrowleaf Primrose

This plant is great for a hot dry spot, very drought tolerant. Has a beautiful yellow flower that appear in the late spring to early summer, reaches a height of 18 – 24 inches. Native to the US from Maine to Florida and west to Missouri. It is also deer resistant.

Panicum virgatum – Switch Grass

A well know native grass that will grow in varied conditions, moist to wet, however does not like heavy boggy soil. Soil should be loose give the roots room to spread. The blue green foliage, which turns yellow in the fall, will reach a height of 3-5 feet tall. In the summer it has airy white flowers that last until fall. Very hardy plant.

Polygonatum biflorum – Small Solomon’s Seal

This is the smaller variety of Solomon’s Seal only reaching a height of 12-18 inches, as compared to the Great Solomon’s Seal which is 3-4 ft tall. Have white blooms that hang below the leaves which turn into a purple seed pod in the fall. Prefers shade to semi-shade in rich to average soil. Foliage turn yellow in the fall.

Schizachyrium scoparium – Little Blue Stem

The blades of this native grass are blue or green which turn a orange color in the fall then turn a deep burgundy color in the winter which makes for an attractive plant during the winter months. Foliage will reach a height of about 2-4 feet. Performs best if it is cut to the ground in the spring before new growth appears. Likes an average to dry soil does not like wet feet, and needs full sun. It is both drought tolerant and deer resistant.

Sedum ternatum – Woodland Stonecrop

A native stonecrop for the shade, and prefers rich moist soil. Often seen growing on rocks and old logs, it is a good groundcover for your shade garden. Has white flowers that appear in the spring and reaches a height of about 4-6 inches, while the foliage remains close to the ground. It is native to the eastern half of the US from Maine to Georgia and west to Missouri and Arkansas.

Thalictrum clavatum – Mountain Meadow-Rue

One of the shorter Thalictrum's reaching a height of about 2 feet. The foliage resembles a columbine and remains a light green throughout the summer. The dainty white flowers appear in late spring. Grows best in a shady moist location, often seen with Branch Lettuce and Virginia Bluebells in the wild. Given plenty of moisture it will make a nice size clump and the small white flowers are quite a show.

Thypha latifolia – Broadleaved Cattail

A very hardy plant that does well in the water or very close to waters edge. Seen around and in ponds and streams. Grows best in full sun. Great plant for many wildlife. Give it room as it will spread once it gets established. Has long green leaves with the widely know brown hot dog shaped flower head. Depending on the moisture it can reach heights of 4-5 feet tall, or sometimes more in ideal conditions. A very important plant to our wetlands.

Trillium simile – Jeweled Wake Robin Trillium

 Another woodland beauty. Has white to cream colored flowers that appear in the Spring, the flower is somewhat fragrant. It will grow about 12 -18 inches tall. Must be grow in a shady location with good rich soil, moist but not wet. As with the other Trilliums it will grow into a large clump and spread, but it is a very slow process. In the late summer to early fall it will produce a dark purple fruit. This is a wonderful plant to add to your Trillium collection.
