More commonly known as Black-eyed Susan, this is one of the most recognized flowers that we see growing in fields, roadsides, open woods, etc. Its species name of hirta means hairy in reference to the short bristles that covers the leaves and stems. Their brilliant color of bright yellow to orange-yellow rays with dark brown center disks which bloom throughout the summer makes them a desirable cut flower. They are easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun and tolerates heat, drought and a wide range of soils as long as they drain well. You can start seed indoors in early March or sow seed outside at last frost date for your area. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooming and to help prevent self-seeding, otherwise they will self-seed and take over your entire space.

Their showy flowers attract Butterflies and can tolerate Deer, drought and even clay soil. Best planted in groups or mass plantings in Borders, Wild Gardens, Cottage Gardens, etc. ,they  have no serious insect or disease problems but can be susceptible to powdery mildew. Their native range is Central United States and are recommended for Zones 3-7.
